Previously on Stiff Upper Lip…JLO is the role model for every creative woman, Ms. Kimberly Kardashian has a reason to use her law studies, stability fosters creativity, and I am building something Great.
“It’s time I take my rose colored glasses off” and admit that nothing within the machine is original. Tonight, Dua Lipa’s music video for Illusion dropped and the industry is serving up the same fare to a younger generation.
Fans on Twitter have been quick to notice that this incredible stunt of Dua emerging from the water hanging from an aerial hoop references Miley Cyrus’s Endless Summer Vacation album cover.
One Twitter user noted that “Dua Lipa’s obsession with Miley Cyrus needs to be studied,” and I have to say that I freakin’ agree. This little observation is amusing as hell.
But I think the thing that we’ve forgotten is Miley Cyrus was actually inspired by another pop icon, Madonna. Here she is in her controversial 1992 coffee table book Sex.
Wait! Could it be? Was Madonna inspired by Kate Bush in her 1978 The Kick Inside album cover?
I honestly don’t know, but what I do know is that many a powerful woman has hung from a trapeze. Shoot, maybe I’ll go enroll in aerial classes.
The message of the song itself is one I can stand behind. Learning from your past relationship mistakes and choosing to be in your single girl era dancing the night away with someone you know isn’t right for you. Not Mr. Forever but Mr. Right Now. It’s empowering. I love it, and as a millennial girlie I can’t help but cheer over the attention Kylie Minogue’s 2003 Slow music video is getting tonight.
Look familiar? That’s because Illusion was shot at the same Barcelona location as Slow.
So, as I said above. The industry is giving us the same, but at least all these women are kicking ass and looking hot doing it.
